Dance Class Descriptions & Information
Classes listed are provided by Charisma Centre for the Arts but may not be offered each year, depending on class schedule and enrollment. All classes must have a minimum enrollment of 5 students, with a maximum of 12 students, unless otherwise listed. Classes will be presented in the Annual Recital unless otherwise noted in the class description. Important information about class attaire is included; teachers may give additional information during the first week of class.Classes canceled by the instructor will be rescheduled within the term. Students who miss classes will not be able to make up those classes. Students who cannot attend a class should contact teachers, NOT THE OFFICE, within 24 hours before class, whenever possible.
CHILDREN'S CLASS
Pre-Ballet
Age: 4-5 years
Exercises develop rhythm, coordination and flexibility and allow children to discover new movement vocabulary and prepare for ballet technique. Class time: 45 minutes
Ballet 1
Age: 6-8 years
Rudimentary barre work is introduced. Exercises begin simply and progress into simple combinations. Basic ballet terms are introduced. Attire for Females: Scoop neck, short sleeve black leotard; Pink, footed tights; Pink ballet slippers; Black culottes (must be above the knee) or dance skirt (wrap around, long skirt that may be purchased at a dance supply shop).
Class time: 55 minutes
Ballet 2
Age: 9-13 years
Barre work and basic ballet terminology is used. Exercises and combinations are more complex. Attire for Females: Scoop neck black leotard (long or short sleeved); Pink, footed tights; Pink ballet slippers; Dance skirt (wrap around, long skirt that may be purchased at a dance supply shop).
Class time: 55 minutes
Ballet 3 (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 9-13 years
Barre work and basic ballet terminology is used. Exercises and combinations are more complex.
Class time: 1 hour 15 min
Ballet 4 (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 10 years and older
Barre work and advanced ballet terminology is used. Exercises and combinations are complex. Students must take a minimum of 2 ballet classes per week.
Class time: 1 hour and 25 min
BALLET DRESS CODE
Female Attire:
Scoop neck, long or short sleeve leotard
Pink footed tights

Dance skirt (wrap around, long skirt) or culottes
Male Attire:
Jazz pant with spandex shorts or dance belt underneath

Mommy & Me
Age: 2-3 years plus one parent, grandparent, or guardian
Environment allows children to learn healthy social skills, develop imagination, and improve coordination and strength in the company of a nurturing parent. Short-Term Class, not presented in the annual Recital.
Class time: 45 minutes
Tumbling 1 & 2
Age: 4-up (Tumbling 2 must pass assessment to be eligible) -- a tumbling assessment will be conducted by appointment, contact Becky Woods at 614.262.9523
This beginner level class will include basic foundations for tumbling. Each class will include a warm up, tumbling exercises and a cool down. Students will grow in flexibility, coordination and balance.
Class time: 45 minutes (plus 55-minute tumbling lab on Thursdays)
Tumbling 3 & 4
Age: 9-13 years (must pass assessment to be eligible) -- a tumbling assessment will be conducted by appointment, contact Becky Woods at 614.262.9523
Levels 3 & 4 will include basic foundations for tumbling, but is considered an intermediate level class. Each class includes a warm up, tumbling exercises and a cool down. Students continue to build on concepts learned in Tumbling 2. Exercises are more complex and require increased flexibility, coordination and balance.
Class time: 55 minutes (plus 55-minute tumbling lab on Thursdays)

Modern for Kids
Age: 8-13 years
Class will introduce warm-up, floor work and cool down. Where ballet is lifted, modern is grounded, where ballet is comprised of vocabulary and "rules" that are constant, modern explores many styles. Focus: strength, flexibility and creativity. Must have completed two years of classical ballet training.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes
TEEN AND ADULT CLASSES
Adult Ballet 1
Age: 14 and older
No previous experience required. This is a technique class and uses correct terminology. Barre work and floor stretching begin each class. Centre work and across the floor combinations complete the format. Combinations begin simply and become more complex.
Class time: 1 hour 15 min
Ballet 4, 5 and 6 (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 10 years and older
Barre work and advanced ballet terminology is used. Exercises and combinations are complex. Students must take a minimum of 2 ballet classes per week.
Class time: 1 hour and 25 min
Ballet Fundamentals (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 14 years and older
Originally developed as a class for pointe students, this class is for intermediate and advanced students. All barre and centre exercises work on building strength and clarity of turnout, placement and movement.
Class Time: 45 min

Creative Worship
Age: 14 years and older
Movement class with minimal technique for those who are interested in developing creative movement expression in worship. Class will explore Israeli folk dance, processionals, structured and improvisational movement and working with props.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Male/Female Attire:
Modest, comfortable clothing for bending and stretching
Ballet or Jazz shoes (see teacher for specifications)
Jazz Fundamentals
Age: 11 years and older
Class establishes classical Jazz movement basics with an emphasis on energy and rhythm and will include warm-up, center work, across the floor exercises and basic choreography, all aimed at developing strength, flexibility, and musicality.
Class time: 55 minutes
Intermediate Jazz (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 12 years and older
Class explores classical Jazz movement in the context of its roots and contemporary trends, with a focus on developing more sophisticated dance vocabulary. Class will include warm-up, center work, across the floor exercises, and more advanced choreography, all aimed at developing strength, stamina, flexibility, and musicality.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Lyrical
Age: 14 years and older
Expressive, interpretive style combines foundations in ballet and jazz technique, as well as elements of modern and ethnic dance. Two years of classical ballet experience required.

Modern
Age: 14 years and older
Created in the 20th century, this dance form was developed as a break away response to ballet movement. Executed in bare feet, this class will introduce warm-up exercises, centre floor work and cool down. Focus on core strength, flexibility and creativity.

Age: 14 years and older
Class will include warm-up, floor work and across the floor. Exploration of weight, suspension and release, strength, flexibility and creativity. Exercises and combinations are more complex. Includes exploration of personal movement vocabulary. Same attire as Modern 1.

Tambourine
Age: 14 years and older
Following the Shachah Ministries syllabus, students learn elements of tambourine movement vocabulary and technique as well as patterns (each with their own meaning and scripture reference). This class is an opportunity to learn and use both the worship and the warfare of the tambourine! Attire should be modest and comfortable fitness clothing; students should bring a tambourine with a membrane or head (not hollow shapes).

Zumba® for Women Over 18 Only
Age: Adult
Zumba® Fitness is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that's moving millions of people toward joy and health. Enjoy the fitness and fellowship! Please wear modest athletic clothing, bring water and a towel. Short Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.

Private Social Dance Lessons for Couples
Age: Adult
Format for private lessons is the same as with the class. These lessons are for engaged or married couples. Lesson times are agreed upon by the instructors and students, according to availability of studio space. Lessons are purchased in 4-week packages. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
Class time: 60 minutes

Smooth, leather-soled shoes, such as dress shoes

Modest, comfortable clothing to allow full walking steps, skirts or dresses preferred

Adult Ballet 2 (by invitation or audition only)
Age: 14 and older
Previous ballet training required. This is a technique class and uses correct terminology. Barre work and floor stretching begin each class. Center work and across the floor combinations are more complex.

Adult Tap
Age: 14 and older
Teaches basic classical dance components with a focus on posture, rhythm, counting, sound articulation and traditional tap steps. Class will include warm up, across the floor and choreography. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
Class time: 45 minutes
Intermediate Tap
Class will include center work and across the floor, building on rhythm and percussive movements concepts from Tap 1. Attire: comfortable, modest clothing with tap shoes.
Class time: 30 minutes
African Dance
Age: 14 and older
Class will explore authentic African and Afro-Caribbean movement vocabulary in the context of a Christian setting. Emphasis will be on rhythm and body awareness. This aerobic and athletic class will include warm-up, center work, across the floor and choreography. Short Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital. Attire same as Modern.

Excellence in Theatre: Christmas Production
Age: 14 or older (or by permission of the instructor)
Theatre production is a team-effort and group collaboration that brings Godly creativity and artistic visions into a form of physical worship and ministry to the people -- those who know God and those who need God. This class will devote fellowship, meditation, and practical support to the ministry of the arts department of Christian Assembly, similar to the vision of the body in I Corinthians 12. Students who desire to serve the body behind the scenes and prepare the way for the Christmas presentation to the Northland community that will contribute to a personal relationship with Christ will enjoy this class.
Class time: 55 minutes
Excellence in Theatre: Resurrection Drama
Age: 14 or older (or by permission of the instructor)
Acting (both vocal and movement dynamics) has a long history of re-presenting dramatized people and events to convey important spiritual, emotional, and physical revelations. This class will explore the staged aspects of theatre, such as script analysis and character development, in preparation for a portion of Christian Assembly's Resurrection Sunday program. Students will train their spirits, voices and bodies to be "living sacrifices," to open the hearts of the congregation and Northland community to the love of God.
Class time: 55 minutes
Mentoring for Ministry for Adults (must have two years of dance technique)
Age: 14 or older
Designed for the serious dancer with a heart for ministry. The goal of this class is to prepare students for movement ministry, including outreach. Areas of study include: Biblical foundations for dance and worship, study of dance composition, exploration of solo, duet and group work and learning repertoire for outreach. Will keep a notebook. Must bring Bible and a 1-inch, 3-ring binder to class. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital. Attire same as Lyrical; have all dance shoes available.

Mentoring for Ministry for Teens
Age: 13-21
Designed for the serious dancer with a heart for ministry. The goal of this class is to prepare the students for movement ministry, including outreach. Areas of study include: Biblical foundations for dance and worship, comprehensive study of dance composition, exploration of solo, duet and group work, examination of secular and sacred dance repertoire, learning repertoire for outreach. Will keep a notebook. Must bring Bible and a 1-inch, 3-ring binder to class. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.

Mentoring for Ministry for Teens 2
Age: 13-21
This class continues to develop the serious dancer with a heart for ministry. As part of this class, students will shadow and demonstrate in younger classes. Students will also define an area of focus in dance ministry and work individually with a teacher in that area. Will keep a notebook. Must bring Bible and a 1-inch, 3-ring binder to class. Some outside field trips included. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
Class time: 1 hour 15 minutes for 12 weeks
Pilates Fitness
Age: 14 and older
Pilates Boot Camp will engage your mind while working to elevate your heartrate for a full hour. You will experience functional body weight exercises, cardo intervals, and Pilates Core Principles for the ultimate calorie and fat burning workout.
NOTE: Comfortable athletic attire, no shoes, socks are permissible (see teacher for specifications);
Please bring a mat and wear good walking shoes. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
Class time: 60 minutes
Pointe
Age: 14 years and older
Must also be enrolled in three ballet classes per week.
(A) Includes barre, center and across the floor exercises to strengthen pointe work.
(B) Includes more complex center and across the floor exercises. Pointe Class B must also be enrolled in A. Attire the same as Ballet; pointe shoes should be fitted by professional at dance shop or instructor.
Class time for A: 30 minutes
Class time for B: 55 minutes
Repertory
Age: 14 and older
Features the Contemporary Jazz Fusion choreography of Mariah French. A piece of choreography will be taught for performance. This Repertory class will explore dance dynamics, musicality and performance qualities as they apply to specific movement style. Must have taken ballet and jazz technique for two or more years. Attire same as Jazz and Modern.
Class time: 60 minutes
Senior Fitness
Age: Adult
As we age, our bodies continue to need activity. Senior Fitness will provide a workout including strength building, stretching, and mild cardio components. Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
Class time: 60 minutes for 8 weeks
Social Dancing for Couples
Age: Adult
Introduction to the elements of social dancing: leading, following, and blending to music. Smooth dances such as Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot and rhythm dances such as Rumba, Cha Cha, Salsa, and Swing will be introduced. This class is for engaged or married couples. It is fitness, fellowship and fun rolled into one! Short-Term Class; not presented in the Annual Recital.
